Pickup Craps – Tips and Techniques: The History of Craps

Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately 100 years old. Current craps evolved from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, but Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It is supposed that Sir William’s horsemen bet on Hazard amid a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when exiled by the British, the French headed south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s believed that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was gotten from the term for the non-winning toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and throughout the nation. A good many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In 1907, Winn designed the modern craps setup. He added the Don’t Pass line so players can wager on the dice to lose. At another time, he created the spaces for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
