Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately 100 years old. Current craps developed from the 12th Century English game called Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the origin of the game, but Hazard is said to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is supposed that Sir William’s knights bet on Hazard during a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortification’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when displaced by the English, the French moved south and discovered refuge in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was gotten from the term for the bad luck throw of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and throughout the nation. A few think the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the current craps setup. He put in place the Do not Pass line so players can bet on the dice to not win. At another time, he designed the spaces for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
