Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately 100 years old. Modern craps evolved from the old Anglo game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s knights enjoyed Hazard through a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the citadel’s name.

Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when expelled by the English, the French headed down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was gotten from the term for the losing toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the nation. Most acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the current craps setup. He added the Do not Pass line so players could wager on the dice to lose. Later, he designed the spaces for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
