Pickup Craps – Tricks and Plans: The History of Craps

Be cunning, play cunning, and become versed in craps the right way!

Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately 100 years old. Current craps formed from the old English game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for sure the origin of the game, however Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It’s believed that Sir William’s knights enjoyed Hazard amid a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the castle’s name.

Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when driven away by the English, the French relocated down south and discovered refuge in southern Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it fair mathematically. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was acquired from the term for the non-winning throw of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi river boats and across the nation. A good many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn developed the modern craps layout. He created the Don’t Pass line so players could bet on the dice to not win. Later, he created the boxes for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
