Master Craps – Hints and Plans: The Past of Craps

Be smart, play brilliant, and learn how to play craps the proper way!

Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately 100 years old. Current craps developed from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the birth of the game, but Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It is presumed that Sir William’s soldiers bet on Hazard during a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the fortress’s name.

Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when displaced by the British, the French relocated south and discovered safety in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it fair mathematically. It is believed that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which is gotten from the name of the non-winning toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi riverboats and all over the country. Many acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn built the current craps layout. He created the Do not Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he created the spots for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
