Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately 100 years old. Modern craps formed from the ancient Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for sure the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s horsemen played Hazard amid a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the castle’s name.
Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when driven away by the English, the French moved down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which was derived from the name of the losing toss of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi riverboats and throughout the country. Most consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn created the modern craps setup. He appended the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to not win. Later, he developed the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
