Pickup Craps – Hints and Plans: The History of Craps
Be cunning, play clever, and learn how to play craps the correct way!
Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately one hundred years old. Modern craps come about from the old Anglo game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the birth of the game, however Hazard is said to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s paladins played Hazard during a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the citadel’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when expelled by the English, the French moved south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was derived from the name of the bad luck toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the country. A few think the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the current craps setup. He created the Do not Pass line so players could wager on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he invented the spaces for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
