Dice and dice games goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Current craps formed from the 12th Century Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s soldiers enjoyed Hazard through a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the citadel’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when exiled by the British, the French headed south and settled in southern Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which is derived from the name of the losing throw of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and across the nation. A good many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In 1907, Winn built the modern craps layout. He added the Don’t Pass line so players could wager on the dice to lose. At another time, he designed the spots for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
