Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is only about 100 years old. Modern craps come about from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the birth of the game, however Hazard is said to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It is presumed that Sir William’s horsemen enjoyed Hazard through a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when expelled by the English, the French headed down south and located refuge in southern Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was gotten from the term for the losing toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi scows and all over the country. Most acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In 1907, Winn created the current craps setup. He added the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to lose. Later, he invented the spots for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
