Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately one hundred years old. Modern craps come about from the old English game called Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s paladins bet on Hazard during a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when banished by the British, the French relocated south and found safety in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which is gotten from the name of the non-winning toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi barges and across the country. Many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the modern craps layout. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so players can bet on the dice to not win. Later, he developed the spots for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
