Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is just about 100 years old. Current craps developed from the old Anglo game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the birth of the game, although Hazard is said to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s paladins bet on Hazard during a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the castle’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when expelled by the English, the French moved south and discovered safety in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which was acquired from the term for the losing toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi barges and across the nation. A great many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn built the modern craps layout. He created the Do not Pass line so players could bet on the dice to lose. At another time, he established the spaces for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
