Master Craps – Pointers and Plans: The Background of Craps

Be smart, play cunning, and discover how to play craps the correct way!

Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Crusades, but current craps is just about one hundred years old. Modern craps developed from the old Anglo game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the origin of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s knights gambled on Hazard amid a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the castle’s name.

Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when expelled by the English, the French relocated south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which was acquired from the name of the bad luck toss of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and throughout the nation. A great many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In 1907, Winn developed the modern craps setup. He put in place the Do not Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he created the boxes for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
