Be clever, play brilliant, and become versed in craps the correct way!

Dice and dice games date back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps come about from the old English game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for certain the ancestry of the game, but Hazard is said to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s knights enjoyed Hazard amid a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the castle’s name.

Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when expelled by the English, the French relocated south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which was derived from the name of the bad luck toss of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi barges and all over the nation. A few consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn designed the current craps setup. He appended the Don’t Pass line so players could wager on the dice to not win. At another time, he created the boxes for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
