Dice and dice games goes back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Current craps evolved from the old English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the origin of the game, although Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It’s believed that Sir William’s paladins wagered on Hazard amid a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the castle’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when displaced by the English, the French relocated down south and found sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s believed that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was derived from the name of the non-winning toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi riverboats and all over the nation. A good many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In 1907, Winn built the current craps layout. He appended the Don’t Pass line so players could wager on the dice to not win. At another time, he developed the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
