Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Current craps formed from the old Anglo game called Hazard. No one knows for sure the origin of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is supposed that Sir William’s paladins enjoyed Hazard amid a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when exiled by the British, the French headed down south and discovered safety in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which is acquired from the term for the non-winning throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and throughout the nation. A few think the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the current craps layout. He put in place the Do not Pass line so players could bet on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he invented the spots for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
