Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately 100 years old. Current craps formed from the ancient Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the origin of the game, although Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s soldiers played Hazard through a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when expelled by the English, the French moved down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which was gotten from the term for the non-winning toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi scows and across the country. Most acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In 1907, Winn built the modern craps layout. He put in place the Do not Pass line so players can bet on the dice to lose. At another time, he designed the boxes for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
