Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is just about 100 years old. Current craps evolved from the old English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the birth of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s horsemen gambled on Hazard amid a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when exiled by the British, the French moved south and located sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was acquired from the term for the non-winning throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the country. A few think the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the current craps layout. He added the Do not Pass line so players could wager on the dice to lose. At another time, he invented the spaces for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
