Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Crusades, but modern craps is only about one hundred years old. Current craps developed from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is said to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It’s believed that Sir William’s paladins wagered on Hazard during a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the citadel’s name.
Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when displaced by the English, the French moved down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which is derived from the term for the non-winning toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi scows and throughout the country. A great many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn built the modern craps layout. He put in place the Do not Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to lose. Later, he invented the spots for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
