Dice and dice games goes back to the Crusades, but current craps is just about a century old. Modern craps evolved from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the beginnings of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is presumed that Sir William’s horsemen gambled on Hazard through a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when displaced by the English, the French headed down south and discovered safety in southern Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which was gotten from the name of the non-winning throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the country. A few consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In 1907, Winn designed the modern craps setup. He created the Don’t Pass line so players can bet on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he designed the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
