Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps developed from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the origin of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is theorized that Sir William’s soldiers enjoyed Hazard amid a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when driven away by the British, the French headed south and located safety in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was gotten from the name of the non-winning throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi scows and throughout the country. A good many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn built the modern craps setup. He appended the Do not Pass line so players can wager on the dice to lose. At another time, he created the spots for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
