Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately 100 years old. Current craps developed from the ancient Anglo game called Hazard. No one knows for certain the ancestry of the game, although Hazard is said to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is theorized that Sir William’s soldiers bet on Hazard during a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the castle’s name.
Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when expelled by the British, the French headed down south and located safety in southern Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which is derived from the name of the losing throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi barges and all over the nation. A few think the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn created the modern craps setup. He appended the Don’t Pass line so players could wager on the dice to not win. Later, he invented the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
