Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps formed from the 12th Century Anglo game called Hazard. No one knows for sure the ancestry of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It is presumed that Sir William’s paladins gambled on Hazard during a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when exiled by the English, the French headed south and discovered sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which is gotten from the term for the losing toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi barges and all over the nation. A good many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn built the current craps setup. He created the Don’t Pass line so players can wager on the dice to lose. Later, he designed the spaces for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
