Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is only about a century old. Modern craps developed from the ancient Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for certain the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It is supposed that Sir William’s soldiers bet on Hazard during a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the castle’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when banished by the English, the French headed south and discovered refuge in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which was acquired from the name of the losing throw of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi scows and throughout the country. A few consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the current craps setup. He added the Don’t Pass line so players could wager on the dice to not win. At another time, he developed the spaces for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
