Dice and dice games date back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately one hundred years old. Modern craps evolved from the ancient Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the birth of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is presumed that Sir William’s horsemen wagered on Hazard amid a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when expelled by the British, the French moved south and discovered refuge in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which is acquired from the term for the non-winning throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the country. Most acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the modern craps setup. He appended the Do not Pass line so players could wager on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he developed the boxes for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
