Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Current craps developed from the ancient Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the birth of the game, but Hazard is said to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is presumed that Sir William’s horsemen bet on Hazard amid a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the castle’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when displaced by the English, the French headed down south and found sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which is gotten from the name of the losing throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and all over the country. A few think the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In 1907, Winn created the modern craps layout. He appended the Don’t Pass line so players can bet on the dice to lose. At another time, he invented the spaces for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
