Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately one hundred years old. Current craps evolved from the ancient Anglo game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the birth of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It’s believed that Sir William’s knights played Hazard through a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when banished by the English, the French headed down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which was acquired from the name of the non-winning throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi scows and across the nation. A great many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the modern craps setup. He appended the Don’t Pass line so players can wager on the dice to not win. Later, he created the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
