Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is just about a century old. Modern craps come about from the ancient English game called Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the origin of the game, however Hazard is said to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s knights played Hazard during a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when displaced by the British, the French relocated down south and located safety in southern Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s believed that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which is acquired from the term for the bad luck throw of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the nation. A good many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the current craps setup. He created the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to lose. At another time, he created the boxes for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
