Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is just about a century old. Modern craps developed from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the birth of the game, however Hazard is said to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is presumed that Sir William’s paladins played Hazard amid a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortification’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when banished by the British, the French moved down south and located sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which was acquired from the term for the non-winning throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi scows and all over the country. Many acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn built the modern craps layout. He created the Do not Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to lose. At another time, he created the spaces for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
