Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately 100 years old. Modern craps evolved from the 12th Century English game called Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s horsemen enjoyed Hazard during a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when displaced by the English, the French relocated south and discovered safety in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is acquired from the term for the losing toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi riverboats and throughout the nation. Many acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn developed the current craps setup. He added the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to not win. Later, he invented the spots for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
