Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is only about 100 years old. Current craps formed from the ancient Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, but Hazard is said to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s soldiers gambled on Hazard amid a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the castle’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when displaced by the British, the French moved down south and located refuge in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which was acquired from the name of the non-winning toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi riverboats and across the nation. A great many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the modern craps setup. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so players can wager on the dice to not win. Later, he established the spaces for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
