Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately 100 years old. Current craps come about from the ancient Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for certain the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is said to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s paladins gambled on Hazard amid a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when expelled by the English, the French relocated down south and located sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which is derived from the term for the losing toss of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and throughout the country. A few think the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In 1907, Winn developed the modern craps layout. He created the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he established the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
