Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps come about from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is presumed that Sir William’s knights gambled on Hazard amid a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the castle’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when expelled by the British, the French headed south and located safety in southern Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which was derived from the name of the losing throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi barges and all over the country. A few think the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In 1907, Winn created the modern craps setup. He created the Do not Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he invented the spots for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
