Dice and dice games date back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately one hundred years old. Modern craps come about from the 12th Century Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, but Hazard is said to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is supposed that Sir William’s soldiers wagered on Hazard during a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the castle’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when displaced by the British, the French headed south and settled in southern Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which was derived from the term for the bad luck throw of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi barges and all over the nation. A great many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn developed the modern craps layout. He appended the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to not win. At another time, he created the spaces for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
