[ English ]

Be cunning, play smart, and master craps the right way!

Dice and dice games goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps formed from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the origin of the game, however Hazard is said to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It is supposed that Sir William’s soldiers played Hazard during a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the castle’s name.

Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when driven away by the British, the French relocated south and found refuge in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which was acquired from the name of the non-winning toss of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi scows and throughout the country. Many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the modern craps layout. He added the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to not win. Later, he invented the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
