Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is only about a century old. Current craps come about from the 12th Century Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the birth of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s knights bet on Hazard amid a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when expelled by the British, the French relocated down south and located refuge in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s said that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which is derived from the term for the losing toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and across the nation. A few acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In 1907, Winn built the current craps layout. He created the Do not Pass line so players could bet on the dice to not win. At another time, he developed the boxes for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
